Family and Future: Planning for Loved Ones with Special Needs
This presentation provides families with practical guidance and critical insights for
planning the long-term care and well-being of a loved one with special needs.
Developed in partnership by the Knights of Columbus, the session focuses on equipping
families with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions that protect both
financial stability and personal dignity.
Key topics include understanding government benefit programs such as Supplemental
Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, and ABLE accounts; the importance of establishing
legal structures such as wills, guardianship arrangements, and Special Needs Trusts
(SNTs); and identifying common planning pitfalls that may jeopardize eligibility for vital
resources.
The presentation also addresses how insurance strategies can be used to fund a care
plan without compromising access to government assistance. Families can gain peace
of mind knowing their loved one will be supported with security, clarity, and
continuity—both now and in the years ahead.
