What You Need to Know: Understanding Municipal Court and Disorderly Persons Offenses

Thursday, December 16, 2021
2:00 pm3:00 pm

Municipal Courts in New Jersey handle a wide range of “less serious” offenses, including simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment as well as more minor offenses and municipal ordinance violations. The majority of domestic violence matters are heard in municipal court. Most citizens in the State interact with the justice system at this municipal level.

Consequently, it is invaluable for service providers, families and people with disabilities to understand the municipal court system, to know what to expect if they are summoned to appear and to be aware of how to best assist individuals with disabilities who are facing charges in the municipal system.

Attorney Joe Surman will provide an overview of the more than 500 municipal courts in the State, what individuals can expect from the system and what steps to take to try to ensure a good outcome.
