Webinar: Creating a Personalized Justice Plan for Offenders with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Thursday, October 15, 2015
1:00 pm2:00 pm

People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) are not more likely to become involved in the criminal justice system than people who do not have an I/DD. When they do, however, they can become lost in the maze of the system, failing to understand the consequences of their choices, lacking eligibility for alternative dispositions and facing incarceration more frequently and for longer periods than their co-defendants without disabilities. This results in a high cost to the community and the individual. With good, coordinated support in the community, they can avoid recidivism and be contributing members of society. Alternatives to incarceration can be difficult to identify and provide but with good case coordination, Personalized Justice Plans (PJPs) can be drafted and implemented to effectively address the needs of each offender, holding them responsible while creating a PJP that provides support in the community. Join us to hear about how the Criminal Justice Advocacy Program of The Arc of NJ has, since 1985, been successful at creating PJPs tailored to the needs of the individual.
