Breaking the Cycle: Stopping the Repetition of Hospitalization and Placement

Wednesday, November 28, 2018
12:00 pm1:00 pm

Supporting families to care for their children at home and in natural community settings is a central goal of the NJ Children’s System of Care (CSOC). Sometimes youth need to be placed outside the home to receive treatment in a hospital or residential treatment program. While a majority of youth initially return to their home, many begin a cycle of repeated hospitalizations or out of home placements. This training will provide information about planning for those placements and subsequent return home, even before the youth is placed. Emphasis will be placed on understanding program criteria for discharge, and the need to identify skills to be taught, and supports that increase the likelihood of a successful return to the home and community. Strategies presented will include development of visitation schedules, facilitating generalization of the improved behavior the youth has demonstrated during their placement, and making accommodations to the home environment and support services
